In the days of the Game Boy, the idea of a portable telephonic device that also contained a powerful games console was a complete pipe dream, but here in the 21st Century the smartphone market undeniably overlaps with Nintendo's handheld consoles. Never one to be bullied out of its own game, Nintendo has conducted considerable research into mobile phones — research that's still ongoing.

The Thought of a Shooter-Only Future Makes Iwata Sad

Here in the West, lots of people like video games in which you shoot people. This is a fact. The war shooter genre, driven by the likes of Call of Duty and Battlefield, has become a huge industry in its own right, raking in countless millions of dollars worldwide every year. Don't tell Satoru Iwata this is the way all games are heading, though: he might start welling up.
It is a reality that some of these [wartime shooting] games sell 10 million units per year in [the West], and this is one valid type of video game genre. I would personally feel sad if all video games became something like that, but on the other hand, I do not think such games should disappear.Iwata also told shareholders third-party software will be crucial to Wii U's success, outlining his hope that the console will allow various people to enjoy what they like. While the president didn't reveal much, he did say Nintendo has been in talks with "major overseas software publishers who are good at developing such games", many of whom had positive things to say about the Wii U and its potential for the shooter genre.

Iwata Knows 3DS Launch Line-Up was Lacklustre
17:00 at nintendolife.com
Big titles were AWOL
The 3DS launched without a Mario or Zelda game, and it's fair to say the machine's sales so far haven't been stunning. Satoru Iwata was recently asked about this matter during a shareholder Q&A, and acknowledged the machine's software line-up wasn't impressive. If we had have launched the Nintendo 3DS after we had prepared more software by which the users felt "I want the Nintendo 3DS right away!," the transition of the sales of the Nintendo 3DS would have been better. You pointed out that our preparation was lacking in that regard, and we ourselves understand that is a point we have to reflect on.In order to avoid the same situation happening with next year's Wii U launch, Iwata is quick to stress the company will be much more well-prepared:
We also must reflect on the fact that we were not able to launch Nintendo 3DS at a time when a sufficient number of strong software titles were ready. In order to avoid the same thing from happening to the Wii U, we are considering details, such as what software is suitable for the launch, more carefully than ever before. Most crucially of course is the fact that Nintendo alone cannot be the sole software sales force behind the Wii U, which is why it's good news that Nintendo is collaborating with third parties to make hits.
