Kinect Marketing as Important as Game Design From the Start

Two worked hand-in-hand

Games and marketing need each other to survive, but that doesn't mean they always see eye-to-eye. In his keynote speech at the MI6 developer's conference, Kinect project leader and Microsoft creative director Kudo Tsunoda likened the two departments to cats and dogs, but said they both collaborated to turn the sensor into a success.

We became a lot more inclusive about how we figured out design. We worked with marketing to figure out, first, who the customers are and what they want. We learned the core principles of Kinect would be about physical play, something that was approachable and intuitive.

There's no doubt that marketing has played a very large part in Kinect's world record sales, but it's hard to shake the traditional view that great game experiences come from designers, not marketers.

A pair of titles out now

A welcome sight on the shelves of European retailers today, with two Kinect titles making their way across the pond. Next week looks like being a bumper week too, with another pair of games available to purchase next Friday. For now let's see what's on sale today.

Carnival Games - In Action!

Known as Carnival Games: Monkey See, Monkey Do in North America, this is a Kinect-exclusive entry in the multimillion-selling 2K Play series. Players can use their voice to speak to The Amazing Wodin and receive a prediction for the future, as well as play 20 games and attractions. We'll have a full review for you next week.

Brunswick Pro Bowling

If you're bored of the bowling in Kinect Sports this probably isn't the best way for you to get another pin fix. Appalling Kinect controls make this one a game to avoid; you can read more in our Brunswick Pro Bowling review.
